This structured reflection promotes metacognition β thinking about one's own thinking β and helps teachers identify what students understood and what remains unclear. STRUCTURE THE ACTIVITY AROUND THE 3-2-1 REFLECTION: - Part 1 (Teach): Introduce the 3-2-1 Reflection framework. Explain that reflection is not just summarizing β it is thinking about WHAT you learned, WHAT surprised you, and WHAT you still wonder about. Present the core content of the topic through teaching screens so students have material to reflect on. Explain that the 3-2-1 structure helps capture both learning and curiosity. - Part 2 (Practice): Guide students through the 3-2-1 reflection: (a) THREE things I learned β have students identify the 3 most important concepts from the lesson (multiple choice: which are the key takeaways? Or short answer); (b) TWO things I found interesting or surprising β have students identify what stood out to them and why (short answer with feedback β there are no wrong answers, but feedback should prompt deeper thinking); (c) ONE question I still have β have students write a specific question about something they do not fully understand (short answer with feedback on question quality β is it specific and answerable?). Each step gets immediate feedback. - Part 3 (Apply): Students complete a full 3-2-1 reflection independently on a NEW topic or extended reading. They write 3 things they learned, 2 things they found interesting, and 1 question they still have β all in their own words. Then they write a brief synthesis: "Based on my reflection, the most important thing I learned is ___ and the question I most want to answer next is ___ because ___." - Part 4 (Reflect): Students reflect on how the 3-2-1 framework helps them identify what they know, what sparks their curiosity, and what they need to learn next. They consider: "How might asking one good question lead to deeper learning?" NOTE: This is an unscored activity β the 3-2-1 reflection is about metacognitive thinking, not getting the "right" answer. Use effort-based feedback that encourages depth and specificity. Adapt topic complexity, reflection depth, and question sophistication to the teacher's selected grade level.
